In 30 Seconds
Paying for public parking in Dubai takes three details and one decision. The details: your plate number, the zone code on the blue and orange RTA sign next to your space, and how many hours you want. The decision: which of six payment methods to use. Fastest for newcomers: SMS the format Plate Zone Hours to 7275 and wait for the confirmation text before walking away. Most reliable long term: the RTA or Dubai Drive app, which remembers your plate, warns you before time expires and lets you extend remotely. Parking is generally free on weekends and public holidays, premium districts price higher, and regulars should skip the whole ritual with a seasonal permit tied to their plate. Every method, format and trap follows.
Method 1: SMS to 7275
The classic mParking route, no app required. Text to 7275 in the format: plate, space, zone code, space, hours. Example: D12345 123A 2 parks plate D12345 in zone 123A for two hours. Cars registered outside Dubai add their emirate prefix, for example AUH12345 for an Abu Dhabi plate. Each SMS carries a 30 fils fee, confirmation usually lands within five minutes, and the rule that saves fines: do not leave until the confirmation arrives. You can extend a session by sending another SMS before the first expires. If nothing comes back, recheck the zone code and plate format, or call RTA on 800 9090.
Method 2: the apps
The RTA app and the Dubai Drive app both carry a parking module: find your zone, pay, extend from your phone, and get expiry reminders, which is the feature that actually prevents fines. Sign in with UAE Pass and your plate is remembered, which removes the typo risk that catches SMS users. For anyone living here rather than visiting, this is the method to settle on in week one; the same app then handles your fines, Salik and licence, which is why it appears throughout our settling in guides.
Methods 3 to 6: WhatsApp, meters, Nol, prepaid
Mahboub, the RTA's WhatsApp chatbot, takes parking payments in chat. Physical meters still stand in many zones for card or coin payments, useful when your phone is dead. The Nol card, the public transport card, works at car parks too. And prepaid RTA parking cards in AED 30, 50 and 100 denominations sit at supermarket and petrol station tills, handy for guests. All produce the same legal result; pick whatever fails least for you.
The traps
The zone code is the one that catches people: pay for the wrong zone and you have paid for nothing, so read the sign next to your actual space, not the one you walked past. Variable, higher pricing applies in premium districts including Downtown, Sheikh Zayed Road, Business Bay and JBR. Weekend and public holiday parking is generally free, but the signs state the enforced hours for each zone, and the signs win. And if you park daily, stop paying daily: RTA seasonal permits are digital, tied to your plate, valid in the zones you select at purchase, and managed in the RTA or DubaiNow app.
FAQs
How do I pay for parking in Dubai by SMS?
Text plate, zone code and hours to 7275, for example D12345 123A 2. Add your emirate prefix for non Dubai plates. A 30 fils fee applies per SMS, and you should wait for the confirmation before leaving the car.
What is the Dubai parking zone code?
The code printed on the blue and orange RTA signs beside your parking area. It identifies where you are parked, and paying against the wrong code counts as not paying.
Is parking free in Dubai on weekends?
Public parking is generally free on weekends and public holidays, but enforced hours vary by zone and premium districts differ, so the sign next to your space is the authority.
What app do I use for Dubai parking?
The RTA app or the Dubai Drive app; both pay, extend and remind. Mahboub on WhatsApp also works, and meters, Nol cards and prepaid cards cover the no phone cases.
How do I extend parking in Dubai?
Send a fresh SMS before the current session expires, or extend in the app from wherever you are, which is the quiet advantage of the app route.
Is there a permit for daily parkers?
Yes, RTA seasonal permits: digital, tied to your plate, valid in the zones chosen at purchase, managed in the RTA or DubaiNow apps, and renewable before expiry to avoid gaps.
